What if our businesses were tools for liberation & social change?

In the world of mainstream business & marketing, profits and growth come first, people are "followers" and commodities, and speed is the name of the game.

We are sold programs and tactics designed to exploit, manipulate, and coerce people into buying our offerings. We're encouraged to "charge what we're worth", as if human beings have a price tag.
The language of empire building is normalized and even celebrated (though as Pam Slim explores in her new book, "The Widest Net," empires are only ever good for the people at the very top).

The "experts" - usually rich, white, cis, thin, able-bodied folks with huge podcasts - assure us that wealth and success are on the other side of their dazzling, testimonial-laden program and rarely do we hear anything about addressing inequity, power, or tending to the state of the world.

Deep down, we know this way of doing business isn't sustainable - for ourselves, our clients, or the planet.

---

The good news is there are long legacies of entrepreneurs & creatives who have been doing business differently.

They've shown us that we can resist capitalism's demand that we overwork ourselves and put a price tag on everything. We can center care in all that we do. We can begin enacting new ways of being in relationship with each other and the planet.

But we can't do it alone.

At this summit, we will be learning and unlearning TOGETHER what it means to do business from a place of relationship and care.

We'll be asking questions like:

How can we price our programs in ways that disrupt capitalism and resist classist assumptions about wealth & worth?

What does it mean to move beyond sustainability and towards regenerative business practices that put something back into the planet and our community?

What does accessibility in business actually mean beyond checklists & the optics of diversity?

How can we change the way we think about marketing and sales to reduce harm & exploitation while increasing positive impact & care?

In what ways we are selling belonging and how can we bring people together in ways that are affirming and collaborative?

How can we do this work in alignment with our collective ethics and our commitments to justice while navigating the realities we all live within?

---

Over the course of three days, this summit will invite us to deepen into our ethics and values and to explore our commitment to centering relationship and care.

We will be invited into challenging, nuanced conversations about how we can approach our businesses as tools of liberation and social change -- imperfectly and in ways that validate our humanity & our capacity.

Join us.

We have been trained to view exploitation as success. Exploitation of self gets you congratulations.
Exploitation of others gets you praise.

Who is this for?

If there's one thing we know after so many years of doing online events, it's that this is not for everyone. So who IS it for and is that you?

This event is for those who are...

  • entrepreneurs, therapists, coaches, activists, & creatives
  • invested in social change & disrupting systems of oppression
  • hungry for new ways of doing business & creating content
  • eager to ask hard questions & to learn alongside others
  • willing to get uncomfortable & show up imperfectly
  • interested in relationship-centered approaches to business
  • asking questions about sustainability, exploitation, & capitalism
  • uncomfortable with mainstream business advice & looking for alternatives
  • concerned with impact & care even if that means slowing down
  • ready to challenge themselves and show up
  • excited by new possibilities and dreaming new futures

If this sounds like you, we would love to have you be a part of this emerging dialogue.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a transaction if you understand how it’s serving your needs. Where it gets confusing is, transactions are also relational, but capitalism (what makes a transaction an act of extraction or oppression) does not ultimately prioritize the relationship, it prioritizes the business and its capitol - which can be monetary or social. This is a lesson I learned in a really personal and heartbreaking way.

Meet Your Host

Dawn Serra

Welcome to the Radical Business Summit!

My name is Dawn Serra. I am a white (Norwegian, Scottish, & German descent), cis, middle-class, college-educated, superfat, disabled, queer entrepreneur. My pronouns are she/her. And I am THRILLED you're here.

This conference is the result of being hungry for a place where more of us can come together to ask big questions, share ideas and resources, and learn together in ways that actually create meaningful connection and change in and through our businesses.

As CEO of Radical Summits, I've witnessed the power of people creating events that are deeply values-aligned - centering impact and relationship over exploitation and scarcity. I've also had the pleasure of knowing & learning from a wide range of entrepreneurs & therapists who are doing radical, innovative, and more just ways of business.

The Radical Business Summit is a place where we can learn from each other, imagine new possibilities, and venture out into the world knowing there are others who will join us in working towards more liberated futures.

I hope you'll join us as we dive into this messy, imperfect, emergent work where there are more questions than answers but where doing it together means we feel more nourished and supported along the way.

I acknowledge that I am a settler who lives and works on the unceded and traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) people. This acknowledgement is not enough to repair the legacies of harm, but it is important nonetheless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really free?

Yes! As long as you attend September 28-30, 2021. Even though the summit happens online (no pants required!), it unfolds just like a live, in-person conference. Each day has a unique set of talks that you won't be able to see any other day. You can watch one, two, or three - as many times as feels good during the 24-hour window for that day, and then the next day's talks go up. Registered participants also receive free workbooks (full of prompts and journal reflections that help you bring the ideas and questions into your own life), and of course, the community is a terrific free resource, too.

What if I only have time for one talk?

Fear of missing out happens every time we host an online event. And it makes sense - there are some AWESOME folks sharing their wisdom and stories. The good news is whether you have time for all the talks or a part of one, there's something to savor and take away from each and every session. If you want to ensure you catch it all, there are extended access options for that!

What kind of accessibility will I find at the conference?

Every year, we do our best to increase accessibility.

  • All of the talks have closed captions.
  • Video speed can be slowed down or sped up, if that helps with comprehension.
  • Image descriptions will be added to all images in the community group space.
  • Alt-text is added to every website image we possibly can. Live calls will have live captions.
  • Extended access comes with a range of pricing options.
  • Transcripts are included in some of our extended access packages (for all the readers out there!), but if a transcript is needed for accessibility reasons, just let us know by emailing alex (at) radicalsummits (dot) com!

How do I access the summit?

After registering, you will receive a welcome email (plus a series of emails over the following days with more information about the conference). Be sure to mark the welcome email as a favorite/safe because you can ONLY access each day's talks via the daily email. During the summit, September 28-30, 2021, just click the links for the talks & workbook. That's it!

Are the speakers paid?

YES! One of the reasons online summits & conferences got such a bad rap a few years ago was that most of them only offered their speakers "exposure" in exchange for their time and support. But compensating folks for their labor is super important to the ethos of Radical Summits. That said, since this is a self-funded endeavor, it's the community support through purchasing extended access to the talks and the bonus materials that makes paying the speakers possible. It's a win-win! More access to their wisdom for all of us while they get compensated for their labor.

I bought extended access. When can I access my bonuses?

First off, THANK YOU. Your purchase is the linchpin for how we're able to pay speakers, offer closed captions & live captioning, and make this a sustainable event. Access will become available via a private membership area the day after the summit on October 1st. Details are in your confirmation email!

Still have questions?

We have live chat support and a help desk via the little floating icon you see on the lower right of your screen. Just click to get started and we will do our very best to support you.
